Media reports of people confessing to hiring killers to murder family members seem to be on the increase.
This trend is being analysed by the Guyana Police Force as part of its efforts to combat crime.
Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, explained that murder falls into different categories. They may be execution, robbery, domestic, disorderly and unknown murders.
“All categories of murders could result from the suspect knowing the victim but it doesn’t happen in all cases,” Blanhum explained.
“But we haven’t done any statistical analysis for those sorts of incidents,” the Crime Chief noted.
There are reports of children confessing to plotting with others to kill parents, like Bibi Nazeela Habiboodeen who was brought up on murder charges in May along with the alleged hit man. She was jointly charged with the hit man for murdering her father back in 2008.
There are also reports of one spouse paying to have the other killed as in the case of Gwendolyn Persaud. Last September, the Herstelling woman appeared in court charged jointly with the man she hired to murder her husband.
In many such reports, the person who hired the killer was reportedly looking to profit from the removal of the spouse or family member.
Blanhum acknowledged that the police have recorded cases of disorderly murders, “as a result of some feud between two parties who are known to each other.”
There are also cases of domestic murders- those where either the husband kills the wife or the wife kills the husband. “As to whether there is an increase or decrease we haven’t done that research but very shortly we will be addressing that,” Blanhum told the Government Information Agency (GINA) in a recent interview.
Recently, President David Granger called for the social impact of crime to be examined to deter the trend in interpersonal violence.
“We need to look at the social impact of crime and embark on a programme within our masjids, within our mandirs, within our churches, within our schools, within our homes to develop a different pattern of relations,” President Granger said.
The President pointed out that sociologists, religious and welfare organisations must work together to resolve this trend in crime. Teaching especially young people, conflict resolution is another essential aspect in curbing the trend of murder between persons known to each other.
