A 25-year-old father of two was remanded to prison when he appeared yesterday, in the Georgetown
Roberto Miggins
Magistrates’ Courts, after allegations were made of him being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
It is alleged that on May 31, at North West District, Roberto Miggins had a .38 revolver in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence. It was further alleged that on the same day, he had five .38 special ammunition along with a .38 ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
Miggins, who resides in Port Kaituma, pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Attorney Euclin Gomes made an application for bail on behalf of the defendant. The lawyer requested that his client be admitted to reasonable bail after arguing that he has no knowledge of the firearm and ammunition. Gomes told the court that the illegal items were found in a mining camp at which his client was the only one present at the time.
The lawyer added that the defendant has no pending or previous matters before the court.
However, Police Prosecutor Inspector Neville Jeffers strongly opposed bail for the defendant on the ground that no special reasons were provided by the attorney to satisfy the court. Jeffers pointed out that the firearm was found in the defendant’s pants pocket, and that he gave a caution statement admitting to ownership of the items.
The prosecutor’s objections were upheld by the Magistrate who refused to grant bail.
She transferred the matter to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court for August 3.
