Principal of the Essequibo Technical Institute, Michael Turner, addressing mostly secondary school students
Michael Turner
in observance of the institute’s 15th Anniversary, emphasised the importance of technical, vocational and educational training (TVET).
This, he said, is more than receiving basic training.
Turner admonished that (TVET) is the key to success.” It’s more than using a screw driver or a hammer.”
The senior Principal reminded students who attended the simple ceremony that the Essequibo Technical Institute is making TVET training available. As such they need to avail themselves in order to receive proper training.
Turner said that the perceived negative notion about TVET must be removed. He added that persons believe that TVET studies are for persons who cannot think for themselves or for dunces. “Don’t allow anyone to determine your destiny.”
Turner said that E.T.I. is constantly modernising its facility in the interest of also facilitating proper training for both staff and for students.
Turner further echoed the dynamism of education. He stressed the importance of making people competent for the work force. The Essequibo Technical Institute was established in 2000 after an idea to have a technical institute become operational was taken up by former Education Minister, Dr. Dale Bisnauth.
Today the institute offers more than 15 courses. It recruits students from Region One, Bartica and the Essequibo Islands.
Students who attended the institute’s anniversary were educated about the various technical courses on offer. (Yannason Duncan).
