Dear Editor,
This week I read that the Administration announced via the Minister of Public Health that the people of Guyana could soon see the implementation of a tax on as they described it, “sugary beverages” and the reason given is to help the nation become healthy. As was announced, the tax will be in the tune of ten percent. As I read the article- start to finish – I was taken in by the PART where the Minister stated that it would in fact mirror what has been done by our Caricom neighbor, Barbados. As I read that remark, I wondered why of late we have been hearing so regularly, that such a country is doing this or that. Every time the Coalition needs to tax the population further to satisfy (pay) for the HEFTY Pay increases that was handed to themselves, we are reminded of who is doing what.
Is the Coalition so insecure that they need to PEDAL on other countries actions? Why do they need to seek this kind of psychological support before enacting any legislation? If the Coalition needs to tax the people more, they don’t have to resort to this level of emulation. This is not the first instance that we have been reminded of which countries are doing this and that.
As I got to that point, it struck me that we were told by our leader “that we must (should) be careful what we copy from others”. Why are we being treated like little children so often by this Coalition.
I would recommend to the Coalition that if they feel the need to copy, let’s begin by devising a plan to 1 – improve the economic health of the Guyanese people; BARBADOS has done that. 2, Devise a plan to tackle and curb the spiraling crime wave that is spreading like wild fire through the country. BARBADOS has done that. 3- if the concerns are so deep for the good health of the Guyanese population, please devise a plan to reduce the stress level of the citizens. We all know the consequences of high stress levels. The effect stress has on the human body and soul is terrible. Please help the people of Guyana. That is the only reason they voted you in; to improve their economic positions, and to satisfy their health and safety concerns.
