Dear Editor,
The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Guyana Olympics Association (GOA) are two national sports entities that are responsible for all and various sports’ disciplines nationally. With this in mind the NSC’s task is more onerous in selecting the various sport personalities, in the respective categories.
In relation to the GOA, determining the Male and Female Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year respectively, the benchmark is much easier, since the individuals and Associations/Federations, are only drawn from Olympics Sports. So in actuality Motor and Horse Racing; Chess, Darts and Cricket to name a few are automatically eliminated by the GOA’s standards. But nevertheless are catered for by the NSC.
However, with time and space not permitting me to elaborate more, I am still of the firm opinion that more categories should be added comprising of: Runners-up for Male and Female, Seniors and Juniors; Professional (semi) and Amateur, local and overseas, etc. Finally, with the Sports Personality Award; I can’t agree more with an individual’s publication of a letter, in questioning the rationale by the NSC, in choosing Mr. Anand Sanasie.
Editor, despite the fact our senior national cricket team kept the Golden Arrowhead flying high, I must ask what about non-funding for some cricket affiliates? A claim of ostracization by Linden? Constitutional malpractices, including the non-convening of the GCB’s AGM of which Sanasie is the Secretary and also a WICB Director? By the way in accordance with the letter, the malpractices were criticized by the NSC’s Director, so why the award?
Isn’t this an act of duplicity and unprofessionalism? Now what about the Sports Journalist Award to Kaieteur News, Franklin Wilson? This individual was the former President (ag) of GFF, also the President, East Bank Football Association and would have firsthand information on national and domestic football activities, under the auspices of the Guyana Football Federation. Apart from football and power lifting, which Wilson is integrally involved in to some extent, along with rifle shooting, how many other sports disciplines does Wilson articulates? Check his caption “GOLDEN JAGUARS COMES UP SHORT AGAINST CANADA, LOSE 5-1” (KN 16. 05.16).
By what means did the Golden Jaguars come up short? Is it by virtue of being outplayed in every facet of the game? “Hammered, Mauled, Demolished, and Trounced and taught a lesson in the scientific attributes that the modern sport now demands? The clueless Jaguars, additionally were outfoxed, outpaced and outlasted by a clinical display from the visiting Canadians. Meaningful journalism encourages one to read, not to be turned off by the caption.
Then there is the Award for the Non-Print Journalist, which went to Avenash Ramzan of Channel 28, a subsidiary of Guyana Times. Once again, what is the rationale for the decision? As the anchor for the Sports News on a nightly basis, the individual does little or no field work; just reading from an already edited and prepared script. What of the still photographers for the print media and the cameramen recording for TV stations? Don’t they count? In relation to the GOA, the Sports Journalist Award to Sean Devers of Kaieteur News.
The individual is an exponent on cricket along with being an analyst, commentator/broadcaster. With cricket being a non-Olympics Sport, which sporting discipline did he provide coverage all year long, to truly deserve the accolade? It’s my sincere desire with the implementation of the long awaited National Sports Policy, the afore-mentioned factors will be considered
