Investigators are working to enhance whatever forensic evidence they have available in addition to conducting a few identification parades using known felon, Marlon Abel.
Abel, 33, of Rose Hall Town Corentyne, Berbice who was wanted on a number of misdemeanors and was well known to the authorities was recently remanded to jail on a charge of discharging a loaded firearm at a policeman.
The man who was said to be a part of a criminal gang that was creating havoc in the area was arrested and remanded to jail after being on the run.
He appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittleholzer at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on a charge of discharging a loaded firearm at Police Constable 20947, Ian Beaton, on Sunday May 8, last.
Prosecutor Sergeant Orin Joseph narrated that on the day in question Beaton was among a party of policemen who were on mobile patrol in the Rose Hall Town area when they saw Abel riding a bicycle in the opposite direction. The police turned around and challenged the man who rode away. He was pursued and in the interim pulled out a gun and discharged three rounds at the pursuing ranks.
The ranks were forced to take cover and return fire, but the man managed to flee down the Independence Arch road.
The police subsequently visited the man’s home during the morning of May 10, last, when he was apprehended.
Prosecutor Sergeant Orin Joseph in objecting to bail told the court that the offence was a serious one and carries a penalty of life in prison. The Prosecutor also told the court that the accused is known to the court and had a number of similar matters including abduction, pending before the court. More charges are pending.
He will have to return to court on June 3.
