Dear Editor,
I wish to add my voice to the call of the Colwyn Harding Support Group, and to hereby express my utter shock and deep dismay with the suspicious and curiously rapid decision by Magistrate Daly to dismiss the Colwyn Harding case, simply due to Mr. Harding’s absence during the last court session.
Something about that hasty decision stinks to high heaven, and I hereby challenge the Guyana Ombudsman’s office, Transparency Institute of Guyana Inc, and that indefatigable soldier of the people, Freddie Kissoon, to take a closer look at Magistrate Daly’s decision.
After all, how can a Magistrate who is supposed to be an officer of the Law, treat the Law so scantily? Mr. Devin Singh, a police officer at the time, allegedly shoved a police baton sheathed in a condom into Mr. Harding’s anus, causing him life threatening injuries, and for which he had to undergo surgery in Jamaica. I am amazed that Guyanese can just sit there in peace and tranquillity, and let such a matter slide by unnoticed.
I am amazed that I can still be shocked, although I saw myself how my Guyanese people just sat idly by, when another police officer set a young man’s penis and scrotum on fire, while in custody at a police station.
That young life was simply destroyed by that cruelty. Not even 100 persons of a population of 750,000 persons demonstrated. I am amazed and deeply ashamed that I can still be dazed!
This could never happen to Samuel Hind’s son, or Anil Nandalall’s brother. Why is it happening to Mr. Harding? Is it because he is no big wig, and so receives no special attention, and no special telephone calls, and no special “thank-you” and no Government Advisor positions, from persons like Joe Harmon?
Nowhere in the civilized world would such an alleged distasteful, repulsive, criminal matter be allowed to just die this quiet death. Where has Guyanese humanity gone to? Magistrate Daly must be taken to task for such a suspicious rush to injustice!
There is no doubt in my mind that Magistrate Daly would have had a different attitude had Colwyn Harding been a person of wealh, or some other form of relative, of the Guyanese elite classes. I am deeply suspicious of Magistrate Daly, and I wish to express my right as a citizen of Guyana to demand that the authorities look into his strange decision.
This matter will not simply just go away, I assure you, Magistrate Daly! I hope that the Ombudsman’s office, or TIGI, or the People’s Hero, Freddie Kissoon, or Mr. Glenn Lall, take a look at this case, because like the Colwyn Harding Support Group, I am not going to rest until this matter is properly investigated.
I hereby join the membership of the Colwyn Harding Support Group, comprising thus far: Joy Marcus; Norwell Hinds; Suzette Fortune; Elton Mcrae; Charlene Wilkinson; Danuta Radzik; Mellisa Ifill;
Peter Persaud
