Dear Editor,
I will be grateful for this letter to be published.
I have been following the issues in the news over the past few weeks regarding the Minister of State Joseph Harmond and Bai Shan Lin. In his statement issued on Thursday 14/04/2016, the Minister is reported to have said that based on discussions with the Chinese Ambassador the state owned logging company of China Long Jiang Forest Industry Company will be taking over Bai Shan Lin by June 2016. In fact the Minister said that Long Jiang Forest Industries Company already has 55 per cent shares in Bai Shan Lin.
What is very disturbing to the Guyanese employees of Bai Shan Lin is that we are being kept in the dark since this take over is just about one month away and we have not been told anything. While this is nothing strange since that is how the current management operates and treats the Guyanese workers.
The employees have now being made aware of this development and are worried about their future with a change in management. The current management operates way above the laws of Guyana thereby disrespecting Guyanese workers and the current administration is fully aware of this, in fact several complaints have been made against management to the Ministry of Labour but nothing has come out of all the complaints which leaves us to believe that they have turned a blind eye to allow all these infractions to take place.
Just to mention a few, (1) the company has not been remitting the NIS deductions made from workers wages and salaries (11) the same with PAYE. The company has no staff welfare or benefits for workers and therefore the workers depend on their NIS benefits in the event of injuries or sickness. Over the last six years there have been no salary increases for workers, management keeps telling workers that the company is not making profits but we know different. I do hope that with the publishing of this letter the relevant authorities including Minister Harmon will look into the concerns raised and further investigate more in-depth.
Concerned Worker
