Yesterday 37-year-old Kelvin Seegobin called “Kelly” 37 of Belvedere Squatting area was charged
with the murder of Corentyne businessman, Patrick Mohabir on January 6th last.
Seegobin, who was Mohabir’s neighbour, appeared before Magistrate Mauricia Mittelholzer in the Reliance Magistrate’s Court. He was unrepresented and was not required to plea to the indictable charge.
It is alleged that on the night in question, two masked men, armed with a ‘long gun’ and a cutlass, and dressed in dark long-sleeved clothing, entered the Belvedere Public Road, Corentyne home of the businessman. He was shot dead.
The information was sworn to by Detective Constable Davidson.
Police had Seegobin in their radar and had arrested him. He was placed on bail. A file was prepared and sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice and subsequently returned, with directions for him to be charged.
He was also positively identified in an ID parade.
Mohabir, a father of six, operated the popular grocery store, Shabina and Sons, on the premises.
At the time, the businessman, his wife, Shabina Ahmad, and four of his children were at home.
He was shot during a confrontation with the two masked bandits.
The man’s wife had stated that during the confrontation she had begged the bandits not to harm the family and even offered them money.
Mohabir was shot in the left thigh during a scuffle with one of the intruders.
The bandits reportedly then returned to the wounded businessman’s wife, who allegedly managed to “scramble” the mask off of one of the intruders.
The men then fled, taking two cell phones and a pair of shoes.
Mohabir was rushed to hospital where he succumbed.
Seegobin is expected to make his next appearance at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on May 2.
