Dear Editor,
Yes it is well past the time for the construction of new prisons. It has been a well known fact that the number of prisoners held at the Camp Street prison far exceeds the amount which could be reasonably housed there. As well, the inconveniences caused to the travelling public on a daily basis, it has passed the time for further tolerance.
I say CLOSE THE CAMP STREET PRISON NOW.A while ago I had suggested that two new prisons be built. One on the East Coast, Demerara. Another on the East Bank Demerara. My reasoning was that travel is easy in these two areas and that would make it easier for friends and relatives to visit the inmates. I again suggest that the government move with rapidity and build these two new prisons. I had also suggested that the prisoners themselves should be the main work force, over each day of the week for a maximum of 6 hours a day. This would
a) save on labour costs
b) expose the prisoners to a new skill
c) build in them a feeling of accomplishment as they see the product of their labours
d) cultivate in them a desire to be better citizens. Land is no problem Money is no problem
Time however is of the essence, so do it right away. Carl Veecock
