Security guards attached to several schools across Georgetown on Tuesday aired their concerns accusing the authorities for not paying them salaries for the past two months.
Speaking to one guard yesterday, who requested anonymity, he stated that after receiving payment for December last year, he is yet to receive payments for the months of January and February this year.
The man, who has been working at the school for the past seven years, told this publication that he is “fed up” since all he has been getting from the authorities are promises.
“This week, next week, that’s all we getting. One time they tell we that they don’t have any money. How they don’t have money, I don’t know. I was telling dem boys (fellow guards) to leh we go protest but them afraid,” the man stated.
A security guard attached to the South Ruimveldt Park Primary, Cheryl Joseph, said yesterday that when she made contact with the Ministry of Education, she was told that the monies were not released yet.
“They tell we that we will get pay after the budget pass (but), the budget done gone already. I ain’t get pay since December. So they have January and February to pay me for. I have to collect like $111, 000,” Joseph said.
When the Ministry was contacted yesterday, Ms. Reece (only name given), said yesterday that the guards could not be paid because they did not receive any monies from the Ministry of Finance.
She continued that the Ministry is currently preparing cheques for the schools and the monies would be available by today.
