A Linden man who was recently freed of a drug case due to some technicalities has been nabbed again at a police road block, this time at Fort Wellington West Coast Berbice. He has since been remanded to jail.
The man Roger English, 50, of Amelia’s Ward Linden appeared on Tuesday before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
He is accused of having in his possession 5.39 kilograms of compressed marijuana on Sunday at Fort Wellington. The man, the driver, and a prison officer were in a Sheriff Taxi when the car was intercepted.
According to reports, the police at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice acting on information about 1500hrs on Sunday, conducted a stop and search of motor vehicles in front of Fort Wellington Police Station. They stopped motor car HB 9856, attached to the Sheriff Taxi Service with three persons inside.
A search was conducted of the vehicle, and in the trunk of the car a black haversack and a black and red travelling bag containing six parcels wrapped in black plastic bags containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found. The three occupants were arrested and taken into custody. The driver and the other man were subsequently released.
The six parcels were tested and weighed. English had initially denied that the cannabis belong to him, but subsequently confessed that it was his. In court he pleaded not guilty.
In opposing bail prosecutor Sergeant Althea Solomon cited the nature and gravity of the offence. She also cited the statutes which states that bail should only be granted in special circumstances. No special reason was given.
He was remanded until March 3, when the matter is expected to continue at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s court.
Investigation also revealed that the man and his girlfriend were recently nabbed at a police road block at Weldaad not too long ago. English was freed of that charge due to some technicalities.
