Dear Editor,
Your article in Kaieteur News of Jan. 27, 2015 on Page 8 “Demerara Harbour Bridge gets better traffic management” has prompted me to send this mail to you while waiting to cross this morning (Wednesday). I commute daily to work from the WCD and can attest to the frustrations faced by drivers. I am recommending a way to relieve some of these frustrations and hope that the Management of DHB would give it serious consideration.
I have observed that between 8.00 am to 8.30 am, traffic from the eastern end is reduced significantly while long lines from the west, north and south of the western end persist on most mornings until 9.00 am. My recommendation is to have two lane traffic from the western end between 8.10 and 8.30 am to relieve these lines similar to what is done after 7.00 am. The benefits to accrue would be enormous as the Police would not be as stressed out and can leave the bridge duties earlier, persons would be able to get to their businesses earlier saving man hours that would have been lost and possibly saving accidents as people usually try to rush to their destinations after such long wait. The downside of course is a little wait for the drivers on the eastern side but the benefits will far outweigh this.
My second recommendation relates to the security personnel who are hardly present on the bridge. I am certain that the huts built at convenient locations are there for a reason but remains empty most of the time. Their presence at all times would deter overtaking, accidents and drivers not adhering to the rules as it relates to the use of the bridge e.g. the driver that attempted to turn around and ended in the river losing his wife. I would like the GM of DHB to respond and let the public know why these recommendations cannot be implemented and if it can, to have it done with immediate effect. R. Sukhai
