The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) will this weekend begin the first in a series of volleyball outreaches in its quest to take the games to all reaches of the Ancient County.
A 60 man delegation led by President of the BVA and former national Captain Levi Nedd that will include players and officials is expected from tomorrow to invade the Riverain Amerindian communities of Orealla and Siparuta, some70 miles up the Corentyne River.
The main trust of the undertaking which is expected to last from Friday to Sunday will be to participate in a full fledge volleyball programme. During the stay a series of seminars/ workshops, coaching and refereeing sessions are expected to be conducted by Nedd and his team.
Another focus of the outreach is to enhance the playing of beach volleyball, female volleyball and get more youth involved in the game.
A number of top Berbice teams that includes five male teams and one female are also making the trip to impart their skills and take part in a two days tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The teams are Port Mourant Training School (PMTC), Port Mourant Jaguars, Albion United, D Edwards’ Three Door Strikers and NO 53 Survivors and the lone female team Black Birds.
The tournament is expected to involve some 22 teams, 16 of which will be drawn from the Orealla and Siparuta areas.
At the end of that competition, Volleyballs, nets and other memorabilia will be presented to the host teams.
The Orealla teams are expected to give a good account, as Orealla are the defending heritage month volleyball champions.
According to Nedd, it is the first activity of its kind and similar activities are planned for Black Bush, and other Riverain areas up the Berbice and Canje Rivers. (Samuel Whyte)
