Dear Editor,
It is the responsibility of the government to make sure that the rates payers of GPL and the taxpayers are getting their money’s worth. GPL is known for its inefficiencies and mismanagement. GPL is known for having poor human relations and poor customer relations; it does not need a CEO and a Minister who will compound its problems. GPL needs a CEO with the proper qualifications and the relevant and appropriate experience to solve its problems.
GPL cannot continue to work with a failed model and a CEO who the public does not have confidence in. The people are frustrated with the constant power blackouts which have destroyed their electrical appliances and if the government does not act, it will lose credibility. The Minister believes that he is not accountable to the public. If the Government does not act and put an end to such arrogance by the Minister, it will definitely lose credibility and would likely feel the wrath of the people. The Minister must be held accountable fortemptuous actions. In fact, only three Ministers from the AFC—Natural Resources, Public Communications and Business—are performing efficiently.
GPL was profitable in 2015 but not from any changes or improvement in services but mainly from declining fuel prices. There are absolutely no improvements to the operations of GPL which continues to overcharge the customers and underserve them. The people are experiencing constant blackouts and there are no plans or policies in place to end them anytime soon. What is worst is that this inefficient and irresponsible attitude at GPL continues to get the full political support of the Minister who seems to lack the knowledge of the operations and functions of GPL. Maybe, they are too complicated for the Minister to understand because of his lack of experience and because he is slow to learn. The people expect better service from GPL, less blackouts, and more qualified personnel to run it and a Minister who is accountable and fair. It is time for the Government to act on behalf of the people.
