Dear Editor,
I refer to Kaieteur News’ editorial of Monday, January 18th 2016 captioned, “Perpetuating a Myth”. I wish to state at the outset that whoever authored that piece came across like one of the PPPC’s ghost writers. This is not what readers have come to expect from a reputable paper like the Kaieteur News. In offering a comment on the editorial, I will restrict myself to that aspect which dealt with the unfortunate death of GDF Sergeant Pyle, his wife and another civilian.
I find the demand that the government come clean on this matter to be not only erroneous but it is also disrespectful of your readership, particularly when it is known that KN was among the first to report on the tragic accident. It was reported that Sergeant Pyle, a GDF Intelligence officer, was seconded to the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU} of the Guyana Police Force(GPF) and he was on an assignment conducting surveillance activities in relation to their investigation of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL), and its former Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Winston Brassington.
The fact that SOCU from day one acknowledged owner ship of the operation settled the issue of its legality. Operations of the GPF are the responsibility of the police leadership and its commanding officers, the same apply to SOCU. That fact must be known to KN and other media houses. Why then would you ask the President and the Government to come clean and say who gave the instructions for Mr. Pyle to carry out his surveillance actives if your intention is not to be mischievous and vindictive? Mr. Editor your paper in the editorial referred to has signaled that it is descending into the realms of gutter journalism. Tacuma Ogunseye
