Eight teams battle for lucrative $$$ and trophy today

Eight teams will battle for championship honours when the curtains come down on the annual 7-a-side Inter-ward Football tournament in honour of Mayor Hamilton Green’s 81st birth anniversary at the Den Amstel Ground, West Coast of Demerara this afternoon.
When activities get underway at 14:00hrs, Kitty will take on Lima Dam just before Uitvlugt battle with Haslington. Victoria will then take on Pouderoyen while Den Amstel will oppose Mahaica in quarter final matches.
The teams then advance to the semi-finals stage which will see the winner of the Kitty/Lima Dam encounter taking on the winner of the Victoria/Pouderoyen shindig while the winners of the Uitvlugt/Haslington match will tackle the winner of the Den Amstel/Mahaica affair.
Those two losers will then clash for the 3rd place slot starting at 17:00hrs while the winners will go on to contest for the championship trophy and a lucrative first place prize of $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy while the runners-up collect; $100,000 and Youth and Sports Trophy. The 3rd and 4th place finishers receive $70,000 and the China Trading trophy and $30,000 and the Business School trophy respectively.
Meanwhile, tournament organizer, Lennox Arthur said that he is pleased with the quality of play so far in the tournament. He said that football fans have witnessed some enthralling encounters and from all indications this trend will continue this afternoon.
He singled out several players that have been outstanding and predicted that they will once again provide the sparks of the tournament today. Those coming in for kudos from the former national coach are Trayon Bobb (Uitvlugt), Gordon Grant (Agricola) and Marvin Josiah (Pouderoyen). “Fans could expect fireworks and skills when these players take to the field today,” he said. The games are 30 minute encounters, 15 per half and the no offside rule is in effect in this tournament.
Once again the management of AH&L Kissoon Ltd has donated a 3-piece suite for the top scorer, while Ricks and Sari has donated 10 hampers to the winning and runner up teams. Several other businesses have contributed to the success of the tournament including Banks DIH Ltd, Massy, Beepat and Sons, CBR Mining, MACORP, Guyana Beverage, home of Busta soft drinks, Aruwai Mining, IPA, Muneshwar’s, E Networks, CIDI, BEV Processors, EC Vieira and Cummings Electrical. Mr. Arthur has extended heartfelt gratitude to his benefactors while reiterating that such assistance is the oxygen towards the success of the tournament.
