Dear Editor,
The Isseneru Village Council refutes the allegation, in yesterday’s Kaiteur news carried under the caption ”Isseneru dredge…Situation escalates; gunmen storm dredge” These allegations are not true but rather misleading and an attempt by a miner to mastermind false allegations to distract the general public from the real issue. It comes as no surprise that this individual miner would compel the media to publish an unrealistic story so as to damage the image of the Isseneru Village Council
He should be ashamed to tell the untruthful story about 8 gunmen storming his dredge after his operation would have stopped for the night at 21:00 hrs. Clearly in contempt of the high court injunction and disrespecting the Judge’s order. His dredge is located at the center of the Mazaruni river, between the two banks of Isseneru village close to the Government hydromet station and other residential properties and not 1.5 kilometers upstream as he claimed. Additionally the image published in the article is not the operation owned by this miner.
We would also like to refute the statement by the GGDMA in a previous article as being misinformed and mendacious propaganda against the Isseneru Village Council. The GGDMA has no credibility when dealing with indigenous issues and would only come out in support of their members and badly advising them. Over the years the GGDMA has used bullying tactics to deprive indigenous peoples of their rights to their village lands and its resources as in the case of Tasserene and Kangaruma villages. Therefore the headline carried by the newspaper is totally absurd and an attempt by the miner and the GGDMA to get public support by displaying unacceptable mechanisms.
The Isseneru Village Council condemns those activities as stated in the article and therefore would not have any part in promoting such activities. We were also informed that as a result of the noise nuisance the school and health facilities will be closed. Students who were expected to write the Christmas exams will therefore be at a disadvantage as well as patients seeking medical attention.
Dwight Larson
Secretary
Isseneru Village Council
