Dear Sir,
The new government took office in May and has demonstrated why we need direct democracy. I believe that a lot of them had noble intention but it is hard to resist the power of to carry out your wishes. The present regime promise a 10 and 20 percent wage hike for public servants. It has adjusted that number to much lower levels but yet want to give members of cabinet up to 50% increase.
Since democracy is a form of government for the people and by the people not the political elite, a mechanism must be put in place when cabinet minister want a pay rise and it must be approved by the people. Are they working for the people or themselves?
What we in Guyana and the Caribbean have in the Westminster system of representative democracy is a charade of democracy. We vote and that as far as democracy goes. If we want true democracy many important issues have be taken to the people. To be a genuine democracy, we the people must have mechanisms to participate in the decision making in addition to selecting our leaders.
Changing leaders is not enough. We must be a part of the decision making process on important issues. We demand direct democracy. We are intelligent enough to control our own destiny. We don’t need a small group of elite political leaders to control our destiny. We either move towards direct democracy or be like a dog chasing its tail – going around in circles. Brian .E. Plummer
