What was the present government doing when they were the Opposition Party?
Dear Editor,
From a truly civilian standpoint, kindly permit me to pose the following question, all being done in a humble endeavor to understand the present governance in the land of my birth, or at best, the way forward for the populace. May 11, 2015 would forever remain etched in the minds of all Guyanese at home or abroad.
For it was that day and date that heralded the long awaited change, and above all the day that the people spoke and were heard. Now the present government APNU/ AFC is embroiled in an asset recovery process and forensic audits, — all the doings and machinations of the previous government.
As the present government under President David Granger is painstakingly searching every nook and cranny to ensure that every van and penny is accounted for, it brings me to the point in question. What was the present government doing when they were the Opposition Party?
Again, is the skullduggery, improprieties and general rascal-type actions perpetrated by the P.P.P not an indictment against the current government in office. Once they assumed office post-election, they knew immediately what needed to be corrected/ rectified/ recuperated and ameliorated.
Why then were some of these dastardly acts not nipped in the bud, or brought to the attention of external agencies if necessary? Opposition political parties constitute a critical component of any modern democracy. Plainly put, no party can form a legitimately elected government without also producing a legitimately elected opposition.
In 2013, the then Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister clearly stated that while the current majority held by the political opposition in the National Assembly heralded a new constitutional reality, unchanged was the scope of power and responsibility which the Opposition was expected to discharge in the National Assembly.
The opposition’s functions, he stressed remain the same, and they must act, like all members of Parliament, at all times in the best interest of Guyana. Pray tell me what went wrong? Who was either asleep at the wheel, or had taken a vow of silence? It is unacceptable for an elected government to embark on a series of long-term projects without prior consultations with the political opposition.
While the present government relentlessly continue in their massive recuperation efforts aimed at restoring what is rightfully the property of the Guyanese people, at the self-same time they need to remind the intelligentsia and the proletariat alike as to their level of efficacy while they were the Opposition party. It is imperative that recall be brought to the forefront, and while even raising the finger of blame, remember that there is always a digit facing the pointer.
