Guyanese woman commits suicide in St Kitts
An Indo-Guyanese, Oma Devi Balgobin, who was an employee with the Nevis Department of Agriculture, committed suicide on Sunday last, reportedly after swallowing a poisonous substance.
Balgobin was found dead in her house in Craddock Road on Monday afternoon. Her body was reportedly removed from the residence around 4.30 p.m.
A workmate told the Observer that she was at work on Friday and seemed to be in a jovial mood. She has worked with the abattoir for the past six years.
An adult niece of the deceased who lives in a house near Balgobin seemed in a state of shock, telling the Observer she did not want the suicide incident to be in the news.
The deceased’s son Shivpaul Balgobin, 31 committed suicide in 2010 by drinking the herbicide Gramoxone.
Over the years, several Guyanese nationals living in Nevis have committed suicide by hanging or ingesting Gramoxone.
In 2012 the World Health Organization listed Guyana as “the country with the highest estimated suicide rate…globally”. (Observer)
