The twenty-one man squad shortlisted by the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) to commence preparations to participate in the CSV male Indoors Championship to be held in Maceio, Brazil from September 27-October 5 this year will commence encampment tomorrow at the National Gymnasium.
According to Assistant Coach Ian Wills, the players will participate in training sessions from tomorrow before the final selection of the team on Sunday. Previously, the squad made up of players from Berbice and Demerara trained separately under the guidance of National Coach Levi Nedd and Wills due to geographical constraints, but were guided by the same programme so it is expected that all the players will be at the same level of preparations coming into the encampment.
The sport has been enjoying a fillip following several commendable performances on the international stage and this has encouraged the GVF officials to seek stronger ties with CSV (South American Volleyball Confederation), a regional body that comprises some of the strongest teams in world volleyball.
The squad that has been in training over the past two weeks is: Wendell Austin, Corwyn Richards, Trevlon Mc Rae, Quacy Matheson, Jamal Duncan, Shemroy Ross, Creston Rodney, Ian Bagott, Jason Seelochan, Beepaul Bandoo, Akeem Bowling, Adriel Moore, Errol Fingal, Luen David, Devendra Latchman, Vance Harding, Khemraj Singh, Xavier Lambert, Joshua Jagmohan and Samuel Fraser.
Meanwhile, the Federation is to host a Volleyball Cooperation Programme sponsored by the FIVB (Federation of International Volleyball). The course will be facilitated by Julio Morales, who is a FIVB International Coach from the USA and it will be held from September 5-9, at the National Gymnasium.
It is aimed at introducing and developing young players who are interested in the game. Interested persons can contact Nicholas Fraser, Secretary of the GVF on telephone number 698-4328 to register.
