The business owners are feeling the heat
DEAR EDITOR,
The small to medium businesses in Guyana are the bread and butter for a large amount of the Guyanese population, either through employment or indirect circulation of money in the economy.
These business owners have come to enjoy a standard of living and economic security over the past decade or so, but they are now struggling just to survive and that standard of life is quickly vanishing.
The Government is certainly in a dilemma, because anyone can see that if business is slow,less tax will be collected. If the government is not getting taxes, how can they increase salaries and decrease VAT?
It is important to note that this is not a PPP/C-generated situation, because as I said before, the business owners did not have this issue during the PPP/C government.
APNU made promises during the elections and knew it could not provide or deliver on them. This means that APNU has betrayed the public trust, which is the worst sin to commit in politics. The young man/woman who was able to get a loan to build a home and start a little business to handle their mortgage comfortably is now looking down the barrel of the poverty line with no home to live in.
This is the APNU-led implosion I spoke about during election time, and this is just the beginning.
We are about to snowball down the hill so fast, it’s going to make your head spin – especially small to medium businesses.
It remains true that this government is too caught up with revengeful propaganda at the expense of economic growth. They are not showing signs of any economic prowess or vision. APNU and its supporters have taken the position that no one should criticize them for anything, since they can justify their inaction and incompetence with the “PPP/C was worst” line, a line that is rooted in reactionary “schoolboy” behaviour that will bear no fruit for this country. Brothers and sisters, don’t forget that reactionary politics is the starting point for fascism.
Regardless of my position in politics and my objections to the electoral system, I am more concerned about my country’s development and safety. Therefore for the sake of my countrymen and women, I would hope I am wrong and our economy may improve.
