Fleeing bandit struck down by car, loses gun and booty
It was high drama as a gun-toting bandit narrowly escaped, minus his weapon and the cash that was taken from a female victim during a daring robbery just after midday yesterday at Melanie Damishana.
The man was struck by a car as he attempted to escape, but he managed to get up and complete that process, albeit empty-handed.
According to the police, Bibi Zalifa Bacchus, 36, of Nootenzuil, East Coast Demerara was in a motor vehicle that had sustained a puncture on the Melanie Public Road.
While the wheel was being fixed, the suspect rode up and held up Bacchus at gunpoint, relieving her of $200,000 and her cellular phone.
But as he was making his getaway in a hasty manner the suspect was struck down by a car and the stolen money and the firearm fell on the roadway.
He, however, abandoned them as public-spirited persons responded, and he joined a motor car which is believed to have been driven by a possible accomplice, and escaped.
The stolen money, the firearm – a .32 revolver with four rounds – and a bicycle were recovered and handed over by residents to the police, on their arrival at the scene.
