Couva, Trinidad – Coach of the Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 cricket team, Kelvin Williams is confident of winning the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under-17 being contested in Tobago.
The national Under-17 team open their campaign against the Leeward Islands on Tuesday and Williams revealed that the recently concluded training camp at the National Cricket Centre has set the team up for a strong title challenge.
“The preparation went well and we just had that little mishap because of the weather which limited our practice matches. I am quite satisfied and pleased with what I actually saw from the guys. It is a good group, a talented group, an intelligent group and if we put all these things together and go out there and play in the manner in which we could and execute I don’t really see us not winning the tournament,” said Williams.
The national Under-17 coach noted that complacency has normally been the main obstacle for youth teams being successful. He revealed that during the camp he ensured each player understood their roles and were aware of becoming complacent.
“We planned so many sessions and the key word in all our preparation was complacency. If you look at the talent we have the only thing that is going to beat us is complacency and I really wanted to get that message across to the players. We cannot be complacent regardless of who we are playing so that when we have a side under pressure we can drive it in even more and break them.
We are not going to adopt the approach that we beat this team last year and should beat them again. Cricket is not played like that and who plays better on the day is going to be successful,” said Williams.
Despite the inclement weather the Red Force assistant coach was able to hold a productive training camp to ensure the team is ready for the Regional Under-17 tournament.
“We worked within our constraints because there were certain things that were not available such as practice matches. What I tried to do was make sure we played lot of match simulations so the guys could get the idea of looking to score runs. I think the ideal opportunity was going outside and playing but that never happened because of the weather,” Williams divulged.
The national Under-17 team finished fifth at last year’s tournament and Williams expressed a desire to improve on the team’s placing.
“The most important thing is trying to finish high up on the table and by doing that we have to beat everyone. If we play in the manner in which we can and execute properly I think we are going to finish high up there or be champions,” he said. (TTCB)
