DEAR EDITOR,
I am still puzzled and bemused, and hoping that the West Indies selectors could shed some light on their decision to cut Leon Johnson and Veerasammy Permaul from the West Indies squad
I am trying to understand what criteria were used to select Jermaine Blackwood and Sulieman Benn before these two individuals above.
Below I submit the recent statistics for Messrs Johnson and Blackwood.
Test Figures
Test Matches Runs Avg
Blackwood 5 243 34.71
Johnson 4 275 39.28
Most recent test tour in South Africa
Blackwood 2 96 24.00
Johnson 3 168 33.60
Please note: Blackwood was dropped after the first test.
Regional – Four Day
Matches Runs Avg
Blackwood 8 405 28.92
Johnson 8 465 33.21
With regards to Mr. Permaul, one is left to wonder what next he needs to do to wear West Indies colours again, since being the leading wicket in the regional four day cricket is not enough. I would be most surprised if Benn gets a wicket in the first test. Time will tell.
I close by saying that opinions expressed about senility in the hierarchy appear to have some credence, as the affliction seems to have spread throughout the selection panel.
