Former national amateur welterweight boxing champion Eion Bancroft is to travel overseas for urgent medical attention following an eye injury that will force him to have a lengthy absence from the sport.

It was disclosed that Bancroft has a detached retina in the right eye and will be traveling overseas for treatment. President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, informed that Bancroft has approached the Ministry of Health who has acquiesced to assisting. “We have turned to Ministry of Health for help. I am pleased to say that the Ministry has responded promptly and is awaiting a few more documents from Mr. Bancroft. We note and understand the urgency,” Ninvalle stated.
According to the GBA head, Bancroft had complained previously of a problem with seeing out of the eye. However it was only earlier this month that the full diagnosis was made.
Ninvalle informed that surgery could be performed in Trinidad. The recovery period is expected to take over six months and makes it impossible for Bancroft to participate in the upcoming Pan American Qualifier set for Mexico in June.
A member of the Guyana Defence Force Gym, Bancroft is one of three boxers who returned home with victories from French Guiana last month.
He held the national welterweight title up until last year before being beaten by Glenroy Smith of the Essequibo Boxing Gym. He won gold at the four-nation Goodwill Championship held here in February 2013 and attended the last South American, and Commonwealth Games where he bowed out in the quarterfinal stage.
