Dear Editor,
When I heard of the murder Mr. Courtney Crum-Ewing on Tuesday last I went through several emotions, anger, hurt, rage and bad memories. I remembered Ohene Koama of the WPA; he was an activist like Crum-Ewing. I met him the afternoon before his murder in 1979 and we spoke for a while.
The next morning when I heard that a man pointed a rifle at the police and was killed, I did not pay much attention. It was only later in the morning I heard that Ohene was that person, and I knew the version that he had shot at the police was a lie.
Back in those days we were told in no uncertain terms whose steel was sharper.
Recently Mr. Jadgeo at Babu Jaan promised the opposition an ass kicking, even if this was meant to be figurative, it appears that Courtney Crum-Ewing was the first victim of the call to the ass kicking brigade.
Crum Ewing, a former distinguished soldier who was transformed into an advocate of democracy after hearing the Attorney General threaten employees of Kaieteur News, died with a loud hailer in his hands, in a hail of bullets by a bunch of thirsty cowards. He died calling Guyanese to the poll to vote out the undemocratic vagabonds who claim to have ushered in democracy.
Just like the police in the 1979, the Crime Chief is seeking to divert attention from the murder by telephoning Dr. Hinds in Arizona to ask him about a letter he wrote, which was published in the dailies, begging the angry masses not to engage in a tit for tat. Shame is a human quality but the Administration and their henchmen have no shame.
President Ramotar, speaking to the officers of the Guyana Defense Force a few months ago, told the Army that they must “not allow certain behaviors to fester in the society”. I would like to remind Brigadier Mark Phillips of that order.
A murderous, politically motivated behavior is beginning to fester, and it has claimed one of your own, a soldier who was engaged in peaceful activity and yearned for justice.
Those who perpetuated this crime have no respect for life, their motto is, whatever it takes, the cup must always runneth over. Brigadier Phillips what is your plan?
Keith Branch
