In opposing bail Police Prosecutor Sergeant Althea Solomon told the court that Crawford-Morrison is still hospitalized in a serious condition. The prosecutor stated that the issue is one of domestic violence and as such bail should be refused. She added that the accused was previously charged for a similar offence and the matter is ongoing.
The couple had also taken out a restraining order against Thomas three months ago in which he was ordered to stay 100 feet away from them.
According to information, the couple Meena, 40, and Glen, 43 of New Budhram Housing Scheme, West Canje, Berbice were in a minibus around 08:00 hrs on their way to the Corentyne when they were confronted by the man who was also in the same vehicle. Meena Crawford-Morrison is currently at the New Amsterdam Hospital. However, her husband Glen Martin Morrison and a 16-year-old of No. 19 village sustained minor injuries and were treated and sent home from the Port Mourant Hospital.
According to information the accused started to taunt the couple accusing Meena of stealing his jewelry. The couple at first ignored the man, but after a while an argument ensued.
The suspect subsequently pulled a cutlass from a bag he was carrying and started to fire chops. Meena sustained injuries to her head, ears shoulders and hand while her husband was wounded on his neck and hand. The student was injured on her left hand.
After the commotion started the bus came to a halt and the passenger fled. Thomas also fled from the bus, but was pursued by resident and nabbed in a yard. He was given a sound thrashing before being handed over to the police.
