…needs $1.5M for final surgery
In their quest to further garner funds for her treatment in Venezuela, the family of 21-year-old Samantha Persaud

are still seeking an additional $1.5M to complete a surgery that threatens her life and that of her unborn child.
Persaud, of Shanty Town, Leonora, West Coast Demerara, is seven months pregnant and suffering from a life-threatening abnormality in her brain. This resulted from a severe case of hypertension at her home weeks ago.
Scores of local and overseas-based Guyanese had provided financial assistance amounting to $2.5 M previously. After exploring options in the Caribbean and South America, the family said that the surgery is being offered in Venezuela at US$20,000 ($4M) in most hospitals, and they decided to take that option.
According to the mother, Nalini Ghansham, the family exhausted all the funds donated toward her daughter’s recovery, but treatment was unsuccessful.
Ghansham said that her daughter is now in Venezuela due to the lack of medical resources to treat her condition in Guyana.
Since the family lacked all the funds to complete treatment and surgery, they are requesting a further $1.5M for a surgery booked for January, in Venezuela, pending payments.
According to the father, Jaimangal Ghansham, after her last discharge in Guyana, doctors informed him that his daughter’s condition can lead to her death within weeks, if she was left untreated.
Fortunately, due to the “great public support” Ghansham said that his daughter left on a flight to Venezuela.
The GPHC medical report on Persaud’s condition, signed by a General Medical Officer, indicated that an “MRI of the brain with and without contrast was done which showed Arteriovenous Malformation.”
Arteriovenous malformation is said to be “an abnormal connection between arteries and veins, bypassing the capillary system”. It can cause intense pain and bleeding or lead to other serious medical problems.
