Dear Editor,
With reference to the article ‘Hamlet at the NCC: Civilization still alive in Guyana’, published in Kaieteur News on Sunday 26th October 2014, I would like to bring to your attention one error in the columnist’s critique. Mr Freddie Kissoon, in this article stated that, “Shakespeare hasn’t been done here in decades either at the Theatre Guild or at the NCC.” This is inaccurate.
There was an introduction to Shakespeare in Guyana, and it wasn’t ‘many moons ago’ or when the remnants of the ‘civilized class’ in Guyana were younger. In fact, the Theatre Guild of Guyana produced William Shakespeare’s ‘A midsummer Night’s Dream’ on May 4th – 6th 2012, and remounted the production on May 3rd- 6th 2013. A total of fifty (50) persons were involved in these productions.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream was staged because the play was one of the set texts for the CSEC English B Examination, and the Theatre Guild desired to help students have a greater appreciation for Shakespeare by viewing a live performance of the play. Furthermore, in 2012, the second year Communication Studies students of the University of Guyana were required to see the performance and write a review as part of their coursework. The critic Mr Al Creighton wrote a review on the performance which was published in the Guyana Stabroek on May 12th, 2013.
The Theatre Guild will be mounting Julius Caesar in 2015; the current Shakespearean play on the CSEC syllabus. The Public is invited. Keon Heywood (Puck)
