China to help Guyana map mineral resources
China has signaled intentions to help Guyana complete its geological mapping following the country’s participation in the 2014 China Mining Conference and Exposition.
The invitation to Guyana had come from the Minister of Land and Resources of the People’s Republic of China, Jiang Daming.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud, as a result of Guyana’s participation at this global event, the China Geological Survey has committed to assisting the Government of Guyana to undertake a mineral property assessment to gather geological data as vast tracks of land have not been geologically mapped.
“Further, it must be recalled that major stakeholders within the sector have been making fervent representation to the Ministry through the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission for such a survey to be undertaken so that all miners can benefit for geological data.”
Minister Robert Persaud was accompanied by Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, Clinton Williams. Persaud participated in discussions relating to the developmental trend of both Chinese and foreign mining industries as well as global commodities outlook.
The Natural Resources and the Environment Minister during his presentation at the Mining conference stated that Guyana encourages green mining and investments that are environmentally safe and sustainable.
“These he said are guided by policies and programmes that are aimed at maximizing the benefits of the extractive sector. However, he cautioned that all investors must adhere to the various acts and regulations governing the mining sector and respect the laws of Guyana.”
Additionally, Minister Persaud pointed out that numerous opportunities exist for investment in the mining sector, but investors must be compliant with strict environmental guidelines which are being enforced by several regulatory government agencies.
