Duo charged with gang-raping Mahdia hotel worker
Two men accused of gang-raping a 19-year-old hotel worker in Mahdia last month were placed on $100,000 bail each following a court appearance on Monday.
The men, aged 19 and 25, were both charged with rape following the recommendations of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). They appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
The two are set to appear before the same magistrate on November 17.
According to previous reports, the young hotel worker claimed that she was drugged and then raped by the men on September 13, last, at a popular Mahdia hotel and bar. The young woman was hospitalised after the attack.
She had alleged that she was drugged while she and her co-workers were celebrating a birthday on the premises. The young woman had fingered the alleged perpetrators as one of the owner’s sons and brother-in-law.
The act reportedly occurred in one of the hotel’s rooms where she stayed. The woman, who is a domestic worker, had said that she tried to fight off her attackers but could not manage because she felt weak.
She said she was severely bitten by the men. Following the incident, she said she told a co – worker, who took her to the hospital and the police station. Photos of the rape had circulated in sections of the media.
Following displeasure with the work of the ranks at the Mahdia Police Station, the young woman was brought to make a report at the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Headquarters in Georgetown by President of the Women Miners Association, Simona Broomes.
Investigations done by the Guyana Human Rights Association also had revealed that the young woman was examined only for physical assault because no rape kit was available.
In light of the cries for justice by the 19-year-old and nongovernmental organisations when the men were charged with assault, the DPP had recalled the file from the police pertaining to the case.
