A 30-year-old mechanic on vacation in Guyana was reportedly busted with rounds of illegal ammunition in his room last Friday. He was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Leon Ramroop, 30, was taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer to the charge. It is alleged that on Friday (October 10) at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, he had four rounds of 9mm ammunition while he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
Ramroop, a married man with two children, pleaded not guilty and submitted an application for bail through his lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat.
In his bail petition, Fung-a-Fat stated that Ramroop resides in the United States of America but is currently on vacation; he is residing with his sister at Lot 178 ‘BB’ Eccles, East Bank Demerara. He said that the ammunition which was found in his client’s room belonged to a licensed firearm holder.
Fung-a-Fat stated that his client knows nothing about the ammunition.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant told the court, however, that the police ventured to Ramroop’s residence because they had found his fingerprints at the scene of a break and enter. He revealed that the ranks then found the ammunition in his bedroom.
The Prosecution stated that it is likely that Ramroop will face additional charges.
Grant objected to bail stating that the defence had raised no special reason for bail and that Ramroop was a flight risk who may not return for trial.
Notwithstanding Fung-a-Fat’s insistence that his client won’t “run away,” bail was refused. The case was transferred and is set to be called before Magistrate Ann McLennan on October 31.
