Two accused cattle rustlers were granted bail after a brief hearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning.
The brothers, Sean Garraway, 22, and Leon Garraway, 29, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, were allegedly caught last Friday after slaughtering one of the three stolen cows.
The Garraways of Lot 540 East La Penitence, Georgetown, jointly faced two counts of simple larceny which reportedly occurred at an open field in Sophia, East Coast Demerara last Thursday.
According to the charges, the brothers made off with two cows, costing $500,000. The animals belonged to Ramnauth Ramkellawan and to Collin George. The value of George’s cow was given as $180,000.
The Garraways denied the charges, however, their attorney, Paul Fung-a-Fat asked that they be released on reasonable bail. He said that neither of the Garraways had ever been charged before.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant explained that that day, Ramkellawan took his cows to graze in Sophia and left the field. He said that when the cattle rearer returned thirty minutes later two of his livestock were missing. The matter was reported, and last Friday a party of tipped off police ranks ventured to a house where the three animals were found.
Grant reported that one of the carcasses was found slaughtered.
Fung-a-Fat argued that the police did not catch his clients killing the animals and asked the court to consider reasonable bail. He said that the older Garraway is the father of six children while the other is single.
The Prosecution objected to bail citing the nature and gravity of the charge. He asked the court to note that not all the animals were recovered since one was found dead. He said that the brothers are the subject of investigations into more rustling incidents.
His objections were overruled however, and the Garraways were granted $250,000 bail each – $125,000 on each count of simple larceny. The Prosecution was ordered to file statements and the case will be called again on November 7 at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court.
