The Bayroc Sports Club and Training Centre at Wismar, Linden, this month celebrates
17 years of serving the community and environs. As part of the anniversary celebrations, a brand new wing, which was built with assistance from the US Embassy Humanitarian Assistance Programme (HAP), was commissioned and amenities such as a refrigerator, electric stove, several sewing machines and computers were also handed over.
The equipment was donated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Several persons from the community were also presented with spectacles by Dr Phillip Da Silva. Those persons receiving spectacles were examined by Dr. Da Silva’s team last June, during a medical outreach programme.
Secretary of the Bayroc Sports Club, Wanda Richmond, said she was extremely grateful for the collaborative efforts of both the HAP team and their countrymen – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – for their timely intervention. She was also high in praise of Dr. Da Silva’s magnanimous gesture.
According to Richmond, the HAP team was at the Wisburg Secondary School where she teaches, and where they have formed a volunteer club. And they were told of the work that she was doing at the Bayroc Club.
“They subsequently visited the Club (Bayroc) and spoke with us about some of the things that we needed to get done. We of course told them of our developmental plans and so on – all the things we wanted to do – apart from what we had already been doing, and the challenge we had with space.
“And they were very receptive to our ideas and committed to help. So what has materialized with the extension to the building and the equipment and everything was a result of that discussion and their commitment. Now thanks to HAP we presently have more space, to do a lot of the things we had been hoping to do,” Richmond said.
The event attracted scores of persons from within and around the community, most of whom expressed pleasure at the new developments at the club.
Some of the special invitees included Regional Chairman Sharma Solomon, Vice Chairman Byron Lewis, and IMC Chairman Orrin Gordon. They all applauded the initiative and thanked both the HAP team and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ representatives for their intervention.
Colin Goodluck, District President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said that in his capacity he is integrally involved in all the Humanitarian projects that the organization undertakes.
Goodluck said that members of his church who are working with the US Embassy were told of the work that HAP was doing in Linden and were encouraged to collaborate in the Bayroc project. They were only too eager to oblige, he pointed out, and chose to donate the equipment.
The equipment includes twelve computers, twelve sewing machines, a gas stove and a microwave. (Enid Joaquin)
