The world looked closely to honour teachers as World Teachers’ Day was celebrated on Sunday. On October 5, 1994, the first World Teachers’ Day was held by the United Nations Education and Social Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

According to UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development. Education International (EI), the global union federation that represents education professionals worldwide, strongly believes that World Teachers’ Day should be internationally recognized and celebrated around the world.
Because the observances fall on a Sunday this year, many schools across Guyana would have had appreciation rallies and programmes on Friday where their teachers would have been honoured. Students usually take gifts and other items of appreciation for their teachers at school on World Teachers’ Day. The day is celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide.
To mark the occasion of World Teachers’ Day, the Gems of Yesteryear group of retired teachers in Berbice held a special Mass to honour all teachers yesterday at the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension in New Amsterdam.
Additionally, the same group hosted its fifth Annual Teachers’ Day tribute and function at the Church View International Hotel Conference Hall on Sunday, where retirees will be feted and honoured. The activity is spearheaded by veteran educator and former Regional Education Officer of Region Six, Ms. Rosalind Garrett.
President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Mr. Mark Lyte, extended greetings on the special day. “On World Teachers’ Day, we wish teachers in general, the best. The GTU continues to implore on our teachers to have quality education delivered to the students but at the same time we call on our stakeholder, the Ministry of Education (MOE) to support our teachers in terms of proving necessary facilities, equipment and resources, so we can deliver the quality education we wish to deliver. “
Member of Parliament Faizal M. Jaffarally, extended heartfelt congratulations to all teachers on this special day.
“Let me take this opportunity, to applaud and congratulate all those persons who are in the teaching profession. Our teachers have been moulding our children for the future in this country. Over the last decade or so we have seen our children here in Guyana excel in their performances.”
Jaffarally said that this is due to the teachers’ commitment, dedication and love for the job, and it is well- demonstrated.
He added that teachers in our country deserve respect and should be applauded. “I think if our economy is to expand, if anyone deserves a better remuneration, it will be our teachers,” he noted.
Region Six Chairman, Mr. David Armogan thanked all the teachers of Berbice and Guyana who are doing a “fantastic job in raising the bar in the last CSEC and NGSA results.”
“Had it not been for teachers, I don’t think any of us would be where we are today. They have a very crucial role to play in the development in Guyana and I would like to wish them a happy Teachers’ Day,” Armogan said.
Region Six Education Officer, Ms. Volika Jaikishun also extended greetings to all teachers on the occasion.
