accessories totalling $12.272M to 12 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in Regions Three, Four, Five and Six, in an effort to improve efficiency and accountability within the councils.
Through the Ministry’s Community Roads Improvement Programme (CRIP), the computerisation of local NDCs, including Best Klien/Pouderoyen, Stewartville/Cornelia Ida Rosignol/Zeelust, Port Mourant John’s, Enmore/Hope, Haslington/Grove and Industry/ Plaisance was made possible.
According to the Project Coordinator of CRIP, Karen Roopchand, distribution of computers, printers, copiers, digital cameras and office furniture to the NDCs commenced in 2012. The initial investment was $7,085,376. To date, $19.357M has been expended to computerise the NDCs.
She said that although CRIP is a road improvement project, the Ministry has found it necessary to enhance the capacities of the NDCs since they are the bodies responsible for maintaining the roadways.
She noted that the NDCs were still using typewriters and depended heavily on manual record keeping, prior to the supply of computers by the Ministry of Housing and Water.
In addition, CRIP has provided the staff in the NDCs with training and in the use of relevant computer software programmes.
Roopchand said that personnel are utilizing the computers to enter financial transactions, prepare reports, store taxpayers’ information and type everyday correspondences.
According to Marva Simon, the Overseer of Haslington/Grove NDC, the computers and other technological equipment given to the NDC will make office operations easier.
Upon receiving the computers and accessories on Tuesday, Simon said the computers will be utilized to conduct financial transactions within the NDC, and staff will be trained to utilize relevant software to facilitate the operations.
