Irate residents torched a car at Letter Kenny, Corentyne, after a speeding driver struck down and killed an 18 year-old girl at around 18.00 hrs yesterday.
Reena Devi Singh, called ‘Asha’ and ‘Ashmanie’ of Lot 222 Letter Kenny, had just gotten off a minibus when she was struck down by a blue Toyota, PMM3080. She was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where she succumbed.
According to reports, the 20-year-old driver, reportedly of North Ruimveldt, was about to overtake another vehicle when he struck the teen.
Eyewitness Ramdat Singh recalled that he was drinking a beer when he noticed Singh crossing the road “and the car come full speed, hit the girl and swerve into the trench,” on the southern side of the road. The man said the teen was hurled some two hundred feet away from the point of impact.
He then saw persons, including the alleged driver of the car, picking up the motionless girl.
Another eyewitness said that the driver went to Singh and placed his hands on her neck, apparently to check her pulse.
Kaieteur News understands that there were three passengers in the car, but they fled the scene.
Residents reportedly were further incensed after they a found a bag containing a toy gun, a head toque, and three fake identification cards along with clothing in the vehicle.
The furious crowd upturned the car in a trench, then dragged it to an empty lot which once housed the Letter Kenny Market, They then set the car ablaze.
Members of the Guyana Fire Service had arrived moments before the car was torched but were unable to intervene after residents threatened to damage the fire service vehicle as well. Expressing disgust at the frequency of fatal accidents on the Corentyne Public Road, the crowd turned up to the Whim Police Station where the driver was being held and demanded to see him and have his name.
The officer in charge of the sub-division intervened and calmed the crowd down. They plan to return today if justice is not done.
