A 33-year-old mother was killed Sunday night after she was hit by a vehicle in Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara.
According to reports, Kumarie Tikaram, was walking on the northern side of the Canal Number Two main road with her daughter around 20:45 hours when a speeding vehicle struck her from behind and drove away, leaving her in a critical condition.
Tikaram, of 43 North Section Canal Number Two, was quickly attended to by public spirited citizens, who rushed her to the West Demerara Regional Hospital by taxi. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her daughter survived.
Kaieteur News understands that the hit and run driver was subsequently arrested at his home by ranks of the La Grange Police Station.
Reports indicate that the driver, whose identity has not been revealed, was found to be above the legal limit of alcohol consumption, at the time he was taken into custody.
