Lusignan cosmetologist murder… Alleged shooter, taxi driver remanded to prison

Two months after the death of Lusignan cosmetologist, Ashmini Harriram, a 29-year-old drumming instructor, and a 26-year-old taxi driver were yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Zamena Ali when they appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court charged with the woman’ murder.

Lenox Wayne, called ‘Two Colours’, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, and Bent Street resident, Elroy Doris, were not required to plead to the charge.

It is alleged that they murdered the cosmetologist on July 10 while she was on her way home in Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

The information was sworn to by Detective Corporal Colin Ross, who is attached to the Vigilance Police Station.

The men’s court appearance attracted curious onlookers. They were led separately into the courtroom, shackled and surrounded by tight security, while cameramen jostled each other for their photographs.

Relatives of the dead woman were also present at the courthouse.

Given the high profile nature of the matter, the gate of the Vigilance Police Station compound which also houses the courtroom remained closed throughout the brief hearing.

Investigators have presented a case that fingers Wayne as the shooter and Doris as the driver of the getaway car.

Both men were unrepresented by counsel at yesterday’s hearing.

There was obvious tension in the docks between the two accused as they refused to look each other in the eye even though they sat side by side.

When Doris attempted to speak, he was reminded by Magistrate Ali that he had the right to remain silent.

He was then advised by an attorney who was in the courtroom at the time that he should consult a lawyer before he said anything that might incriminate him further.

Responding to questions from Magistrate Ali, Wayne, who is well known to the police, said that he is a teacher at a popular drumming school.

The father of two told the court that he was charged on two previous occasions and had served a 10- year sentence for robbery under arms.

Doris, on the other hand, said he was never charged by the police.

Pandemonium almost broke out when Magistrate Ali remanded the men to prison until October 3 for the police to present their report.

Wayne who up till then had shown no signs of anger accused Doris of wrongly implicating him

“I want know how y’all does put people in stupidness,” he said angrily and had to be cautioned by the Magistrate.

He continued his tirade into the courtyard, accusing the taxi driver of being a snitch but was careful not to openly threaten him in front of the cops who were escorting them back to the lock-ups.

Police are certain the Harriram’s murder was not a robbery but rather a paid hit ordered by persons connected to the trade in illicit drugs.

There are reports that a price of $2,5M was on the cosmetologist’s life.

Both suspects were arrested last week Wednesday and their detention led to the arrest of a close relative of the dead woman and another man.

However, this newspaper has learnt that the close relative and the other man have been released on bail but investigations are continuing.
