DEAR EDITOR,
I note with some alarm that we have recently postponed the banning of plastic non-biodegradable containers and Styrofoam items. These do great harm to the environment and make the task of cleaning the city and keeping our waterways clear difficult.
This decision to postpone the banning of these items worries me. First, there is an importer with adequate supplies of biodegradable containers. Is it that this supplier is not one of the government’s ‘sacred cows’? Beyond this, when the solid waste project was conceived more than ten (10) years ago, two important recommendations were made. First, an intensive public awareness process; but for reasons which only the government can explain, this was not done, But where is the IDB money?
We hear of sporadic programmes such as ‘Pick it up’, but we made the point to the Minister that the approach should be `Do not drop it’. Next was to effect a total ban on non-biodegradable food boxes etc.
Today, friends of the State, only this year brought in large quantities of plastic non-biodegradable items. Is this behind putting off the ban? It appears that the integrity of the city and the country is being sacrificed for the millions in the pockets of those with the right connections.
