The search is still on for two crew members who went missing after a Guyana-registered Motor Tanker in which they were travelling capsized in the mouth of the Corentyne River, on Tuesday last.
“A mark has been placed on the capsized vessel to alert other vessels in the area of the floating object,” says Captain Stephen Thomas, Director of Maritime Safety.
The cause of the mishap remains unknown, as the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) is waiting to interview the two rescued crew members.
According to Captain Thomas, the vessel was due for an inspection this year. However, when it was inspected last year it was certified seaworthy.
On Tuesday, Coast Guard responded to a distress call at approximately 21:00hrs after the Guyana-registered Motor Tanker Swift Dolphin capsized off the Coast in the vicinity of the mouth of the Corentyne River. The vessel was proceeding from Paramaribo, Suriname to Georgetown.
Thomas said that the owner of the vessel claimed no cargo was onboard the vessel.
According to MARAD in a statement, a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Skyvan did an aerial reconnaissance of the area yesterday. In addition, the Hampton Rose – re-supply vessel – was deployed to the area. It departed the Boat House, Stabroek Market at 14:30 hrs and was expected to reach the site around 21:00 hrs.
According to Harbour Master (ag), Michael Tennant, three surveyors, a diver and a Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard Officer are onboard Hampton Rose.
“Upon their arrival they are tasked with marking the wreckage, and scouring the area for the missing men.”
In addition, Oldendorff, a bauxite company that operates out of the Berbice River, has also dispatched a vessel to join the rescue exercise.
Meanwhile, the two rescued crewmembers, who are onboard MV Joanna I, were expected to arrive sometime last evening at Port Georgetown. There they will be met by MARAD officials, Coast Guard, members of the Guyana Police Force and a Government medical officer.
MARAD said its Search and Rescue Centre remains activated.
“No conclusion has been arrived at as yet with respect to the fate of the missing men.”
