The two pit bulls that mauled 51-year-old Joanne Carter to death at Lamaha Springs last
week were reportedly put down last Saturday. A post mortem examination confirmed that the woman had succumbed as a result of injuries sustained during an attack by the animals.
The owner of the dogs, Leslie Thomside, who had to be rushed to a city hospital following a spike in his blood pressure, has also been released from the health facility, and is said to be awaiting comments of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who is considering whether legal action should be taken.
Carter who resided at Lot 232 Berbice Street, Block N, Lamaha Springs, had occupied a small flat aback of the property’s main house for three months. She had been taken in by her sister and brother-in-law.
When the fatal attack occurred, no one else was at home. Carter had bite marks about her body, deep gashes on the head and a severe injury to the throat.
Thomside was taken into custody following the incident, but fell ill. Head of ‘A’ Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Clifton Hicken told Kaieteur News yesterday that the case file is still with the DPP, who will be offering advice on the matter.
In more prevalent cases, charges usually relate to setting dogs at large. However in this case, the dogs were family pets and attacked one of the home’s occupants.
Joanne Carter was buried on Wednesday.
In a public missive, the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) called for the implementation and enforcement of legislation to foster responsible ownership of dangerous dogs. The Society said the matter can no longer be ignored if the country is to earnestly clampdown on the number of pit bull attacks on humans.
The body urged that Guyana follow Trinidad and Tobago’s lead and implement legislation to deal with dangerous dogs – pit bulls in particular. T&T has implemented laws that require dog owners to have insurance, licences and to maintain tracking chips on the animals.
Several other dog attacks have occurred where harm was caused to both animals and humans.
