A fourteen year old boy perished on Tuesday, last, while on a church camp in Orealla.
Andrew Dayal Singh of Number 71 Village left his home on Monday with some members of the Praise Tabernacle Fellowship Church of Bloomfield for a four-day trip to the area.
According to Samuel Singh, a member of the group, they ventured to an area called “Chalk Hill” and as they were making their way down to the creek the lad was the first to head into the water.
“We were all going down the hill towards the creek and Andrew ran down, starting to take off his clothes, and I told him to be careful as he went into the water. He was the tallest, so he went far out.”
Samuel Singh explained that Andrew Dayal Singh and a few other boys were playing in the water and soon after he called out to say he was drowning but the friends thought that he was joking.
“After a while we saw that he was struggling in the water, but by the time we realized that he actually needed help it was too late. The water kept pulling him and none of us there knew how to swim.”
Samuel Singh related that they quickly summoned a diver who managed to retrieve him. The man reportedly tried CPR, but it was too late.
The teen’s distraught father Basil Dayal Singh, said his son would be missed dearly. He described the boy as a “willing and joyful individual who answers to the call of help to anyone”.
“He lived a peaceful life serving God and helping others.”
When this publication visited the family, the boy’s mother was in a state of disbelief and was unable to speak.
Andrew Dayal Singh was a student of the Line Path Lutheran School. He leaves to mourn his parents and sister.
