A 17-year-old boy who robbed a couple of nearly $300,000 on cash, gadgets and jewellery at knife-point during a midday outing at the Promenade Gardens on Labour Day has been jailed for 50 months.
Dwayne Christopher of Rosemary Lane, South Cummingsburg, had spent the past four months as a remand prisoner on an armed robbery charge. His case was called before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Charges were formally laid against the teen earlier this year for using a knife to rob Niquan Nester and Kerlyn Isaacs of a quantity of cash and jewellery on Labour Day (May 1) at the Promenade Gardens on Carmichael and Middle Streets, Georgetown.
During his first appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on May 12, Christopher pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison.
Prosecutor, Inspector Joel Ricknauth had explained that about 11:30 that day, Nester and Isaacs were in the Promenade Gardens when the accused and an accomplice approached them knife-in-hand and demanded they hand over their valuables.
After taking the items, the duo fled the scene. Christopher was later apprehended by police ranks. The teen made six court appearances. At his fourth court hearing on June 17, he changed his plea and was on Friday sentenced to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman after she had received a probation report for him.
It was revealed that the teen was previously sentenced on another robbery charge and was released on two years’ probation.
