Irate villagers with one of the men who said they were soliciting donations.
Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
The timely intervention of some public spirited citizens, including a pastor and members of the media who were passing at the same time, saved the day. Two men in blue and another accomplice who managed to escape serious blows, told media operatives present that they hail from Victoria, East Coast Demerara.
They were being chased by villagers armed with sticks and cutlasses, because the villagers suspected that they were bandits.
The hapless men were accosted on the Albion Public Road and were just being beaten when they were rescued.
They carried papers and stated that they represented a church in Victoria. They said that they were sent by a Pastor Smith in the area to solicit donations for homeless children and orphanages.
As the situation became tense, the men were escorted to the nearby Albion Police station where they were questioned.
Some of the villagers who were armed with cutlasses were also taken into custody.
