Railway Embankment one-way traffic kicks in
Two days after its implementation, motorists are quickly becoming accustomed to the one-way arrangement along the East Coast Demerara railway embankment between Sheriff Street and Beterverwagting.

The new arrangement which sees traffic flowing in an easterly direction only between 06:00 and 09:00 hours, was put in place from Monday last, and despite a few hiccups, the situation has already led to a significant improvement in the flow of traffic.
On site to see that things went smoothly over the past two days were Divisional Commander (A Division) Clifton Hicken and his Traffic Officer Calvin Brutus.
Hicken told this newspaper that while most motorists have already bought into the new arrangement, it will take close to a week for all of them to get accustomed. He explained that in collaboration with the Police ‘C’ Division (East Coast Demerara), traffic ranks have been deployed at strategic points along the identified stretch of carriageway to guide motorists so that there will be no glitches.
He said that the ranks will remain at these points for as long as it takes for the arrangement to be normalized.
“It will be sustained, once we’re getting the results we’re looking for…the Traffic Officer and I are observing the flow of traffic and we’re trying to identify where the trouble areas are,” Hicken told Kaieteur News.
Superintendent Brutus welcomed the new arrangement, since it enables motorists coming from the East Coast of Demerara to access the city with less hassle from congestion. He however pointed out that more persons need to be sensitized, and the sooner this is done the better it will be.
“Persons are getting more familiar with what is happening…there will still be a few persons who would not be familiar with what is happening right now…but the majority should know within a week,” the Georgetown Traffic Officer told this newspaper.
Guyana’s growing vehicle population has forced new traffic arrangements in other parts of the country.
Only recently the police were forced to facilitate three-way traffic interchangeably to ease the congestion on a section of the East Bank Demerara Public Road.
