Fire destroys pensioner’s home
A Sparta, Essequibo, man escaped unhurt Friday evening after fire engulfed his three-bedroom concrete house.
Sydney Blackman, a/k”Siddo”, 73, was asleep when the fire started. Fire tenders which promptly responded to a distress call were able to contain the fire to only the interior of the house.

One of Blackman’s nieces, Pamela Stoby, said that her uncle was asleep Friday when the fire started.
Stoby explained that the fire, which she suspected to be of electrical origin started inside the building.
Stoby said that only last week while she was on one of her frequent visits to her uncle’s Sparta residence she noticed an electrical wire sparking but she didn’t pay it any heed.
Blackman’s niece said that Friday afternoon around 14:30 hours one of her grandsons took a meal for her uncle. She was subsequently alerted to the fire by a hire car driver. Stoby said that she rushed to the scene immediately after learning about the fire.
Stoby is most grateful that her uncle was not seriously hurt. He lost all of his household equipment, including his clothes, bed, television and sofa in the fire. She said that her uncle returned to the Essequibo Coast only three months ago.
Blackman is now staying with his niece at Devonshire Castle until his house is repaired. The police visited the scene but are still to take statements from Mr. Blackman.
