Exactly three weeks after he was appointed as the Commander of ‘A’ Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Clifton Hicken and his team, yesterday interacted with patrons as they walked around the Stabroek Market and its environs.
The Commander went as far as Regent Street and even the Route 42 bus park just to get a feel as to what happens on a daily basis in some of the busy streets in the city.
“When we would have taken over, there was a plan. So what we are doing now is identifying the weaknesses around the city and developing them into strengths as we go along the line,” Hicken said.
He also added that yesterday’s “walk-around” was his first such move since he took office three weeks ago, and a way of familiarizing himself with vendors and the corporate sector.
“It is important that they (patrons) understand the direction in which we are going and the assistance we can bring to them in terms of crime and security,” the commander stressed.
The move made by Hicken was well appreciated by patrons. Some vendors were heard saying, “the big man himself” as he shook their hands. He even patronized some vendors.
The fright on the face of one teenage fruit vendor was visible when the commander asked him what the symbol (tear drops) under his left eye represents.
“Hmmm, hmmmmm just a style,” he murmured as his friends giggled.
One taxi driver used the opportunity to complain about the Berbice Car Park which he claimed was too small, but was surprised when he was informed that where he was actually parked was a breach of the law.
And, although Corporal Garvin Boyce was a part of the “walk-around” he did not spare road users who ignored the traffic lights. “You! Pull over!” he shouted at one Route 48 bus driver who failed to stop when the light indicated that he stop.
Asked what was the reason for him being called “the man who never smiles” Corporal Boyce explained, “you never smile with road users because they will not take you seriously,” as he “eventually” let out a smile.
On April 07 last Senior Superintendent Hicken was named the Commander of ‘A’ Division.
